Raccoon
Creek County Park
Situated in the foothills of Southeastern
Ohio, the park is bounded on the north
by Raccoon Creek, the stream formerly
called Etha-Petha, the Shawnee
word for Raccoon. To the South lie hills
and upland fields adjacent to the historic
Poplar Knob. The county park showcases
both natural areas and recreation facilities
that afford visitors many and varied
leisure experiences year round. The
diverse wildlife habitats at the park
support populations of ruffed grouse,
wild turkey, white-tailed deer, fox,
and raccoon. Many varieties of water-fowl
and songbirds |

be easily observed along with eastern bluebirds,
a local favorite. Carpets of trillium, the
official park wildflower, are easily spotted
in springtime. Reflexed umbrella sedge,a threatened
plant, earned the parkdesignation as an Ohio
Natural Landmark. The flora and fauna of the
Raccoon Creek County Park is complemented
with scenic vistas, deep gorges, wetlands,
meadows, woodlands, and green open space.
Significant natural areas can be viewed from
hiking and nature trails within the park system. |
